Anthropic expands political influence with launch of new PAC

Anthropic has taken a clear step into the political arena by filing paperwork to establish a new political action committee, signalling that the company is intensifying its efforts to shape policy and regulatory discussions on artificial intelligence.

The newly formed committee, called AnthroPAC, is expected to support candidates from both major political parties during the upcoming midterm elections. Its contributions will target sitting lawmakers in Washington, D.C., as well as emerging political figures. According to Bloomberg's reporting, the PAC will be financed through voluntary employee contributions, with individual donations capped at $5,000. The official filing submitted to the Federal Election Commission lists Allison Rossi, Anthropic's treasurer, as the signatory.

This move reflects a broader trend across the artificial intelligence sector, where companies are increasingly investing in political engagement to influence how regulations are shaped at both the state and federal levels. Firms operating in this rapidly evolving space are simultaneously collaborators and competitors, and policy decisions could significantly impact their future growth and operations.

Recent reports highlight just how much the industry is investing in political influence. The Washington Post noted last month that AI-related companies have collectively contributed around $185 million to midterm election campaigns. Earlier, The New York Times reported on another initiative connected to Anthropic — a Super PAC named Public First — which has reportedly received at least $20 million in backing from the company. That organisation has already funded advertising campaigns to promote specific regulatory approaches to artificial intelligence.

Anthropic's increasing political activity comes at a time when the company is also facing a high-profile dispute with the United States Department of Defence. The conflict, which began earlier this year, centres on how the government is using Anthropic's AI systems and what rules or safeguards should govern their use.

As debates around AI safety, oversight, and national security intensify, Anthropic's entry into formal political fundraising underscores how seriously major AI labs take their role in shaping the regulatory environment that will define the industry's future.
