Delta Investigates Fake Wi-Fi Network Created Aboard Las Vegas-Atlanta Flight

Delta Air Lines is investigating after an unidentified passenger allegedly created a fake Wi-Fi network aboard a flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta, prompting the crew to shut down the aircraft's legitimate internet service temporarily.

The incident occurred Monday aboard Delta Flight 591. Delta said the aircraft’s operating systems were not affected and the safety of the flight was never at risk.

“The safety of flight was never in question and no aircraft operating systems were affected,” Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant said.

Delta investigates fake Wi-Fi network aboard flight

Delta said its legitimate in-flight network was not compromised. The flight crew switched off the aircraft’s Wi-Fi for about 30 minutes after becoming aware of the unauthorised network.

Pilots sent two messages to air traffic control during the flight describing what they believed was a “scam Wi-Fi” network designed to impersonate the aircraft’s legitimate wireless service.

The pilots said they had limited information about who was responsible. They also noted that some passengers aboard the flight had attended cybersecurity conferences held in Las Vegas the previous week.

It remains unclear what the person or people behind the network intended to do or whether any passengers connected to it.

Delta plans to work with federal authorities

Fake wireless networks can be created using commercially available security-testing equipment. Devices designed to imitate legitimate Wi-Fi networks are commonly used by cybersecurity professionals for authorized testing and by hobbyists learning about network security.

Delta said it is conducting a full investigation and plans to cooperate with federal law enforcement and aviation regulators as it works to establish what happened.

The Atlanta Police Department referred questions about the incident to federal authorities. Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Steve Kulm said the agency had not received a report about the incident at the time of the source reporting. At the same time, the FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Although the circumstances surrounding the unauthorised network remain under investigation, Delta emphasised that neither its onboard network nor systems involved in operating the aircraft were compromised.
