Microsoft has announced the launch of a new operating business called Microsoft Frontier Company, a dedicated organisation focused on helping enterprises successfully deploy artificial intelligence using Microsoft’s existing AI technologies. The initiative will be supported by a $2.5 billion investment from Microsoft and a workforce of approximately 6,000 engineering and industry specialists.

In a statement introducing the new venture, Microsoft Commercial Business CEO Judson Althoff pushed back against describing the initiative as a traditional Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) operation, a label commonly associated with similar AI deployment efforts. “This goes beyond what has been labelled as Forward-Deployed Engineering,” Althoff wrote. “It will be the largest, most capable, outcome-driven engineering organisation in the industry.”

Even so, the new business closely resembles several AI deployment ventures that have emerged in recent months using the Forward Deployed Engineer model. Just two days earlier, Amazon Web Services revealed a $1 billion internal commitment to launch its own AI deployment organisation, openly embracing the FDE approach. OpenAI and Anthropic have also introduced similar initiatives, although those projects include additional backing from private equity investors.

Microsoft’s extensive enterprise customer base is expected to provide the new operation with a significant advantage. The company already has engineering teams working with many Fortune 500organizationss, giving Microsoft Frontier Company an established foundation for expanding AI deployments. Microsoft said early partners in the initiative include the London Stock Exchange Group, Unilever, Land O’Lakes, and Accenture.
