Sony announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue the production of physical discs for all newly released PlayStation games starting in January 2028, signalling a significant shift toward an entirely digital future. From that point forward, every new PlayStation title will be distributed digitally through the PlayStation Store and other authorised digital retailers. Games launched before the transition will continue to remain available in physical disc format.

For decades, physical game discs have been an essential part of gaming culture, making the announcement an emotional moment for many collectors and long-time PlayStation fans. However, Sony said the decision reflects the way the overwhelming majority of players already purchase and enjoy their games today.

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the company said in its official announcement.

Sony’s financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025 illustrate how dramatically purchasing habits have shifted. According to the company, digital downloads accounted for 85% of all full-game software sales on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, while physical game discs accounted for the remaining 15%.

The decline in physical game sales has also had a noticeable impact on traditional retailers. Stores that once depended heavily on selling boxed games have continued to shrink as consumers increasingly favour digital purchases. GameStop, for example, has reportedly closed more than 1,300 stores over the past two fiscal years.

The announcement also follows recent backlash from Grand Theft Auto 6 fans after it was revealed that the game’s so-called “physical” edition would include only a download code in the package rather than an actual game disc. The reaction demonstrated that a sizeable portion of the gaming community still values owning and collecting physical editions of their favourite titles.

Alongside the announcement, Sony also confirmed that it will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 in selected markets later this year. The company plans to expand those closures globally next year, when both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital stores will officially cease operations worldwide.

Once those online stores are closed, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital games or downloadable content for those legacy platforms. Sony stated, however, that players will continue to have access to previously purchased games and digital content through downloads for the foreseeable future.
