YouTube rolls out an AI playlist generator for Premium users
YouTube introduces an AI playlist generator for Premium users, allowing subscribers to create personalised music playlists using simple text prompts.
YouTube has begun rolling out a new AI-powered playlist creation tool for Premium users on iOS and Android, enabling subscribers to generate custom playlists with simple text prompts.
To access the feature, users can navigate to the Library tab, tap the “New” button, and choose the “AI playlist” option. From there, they can enter a prompt either by typing or using voice input. Prompts might include themes or moods such as “raging death metal,” “sad post rock,” “progressive house mix for a chill party,” “indie pop,” or “90s classic hits.” Based on the request, the system assembles a tailored playlist.
The company has been experimenting with AI-driven playlist creation for some time. In July 2024, YouTube tested a similar feature in the United States that allowed users to build personalised radio stations using prompts.
Competing streaming platforms have moved in a comparable direction. Services such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer have also introduced AI-based tools to generate playlists or customised radio experiences.
The rollout is part of YouTube’s broader effort to strengthen the appeal of its Premium subscription tier. Earlier this week, the company began limiting access to song lyrics within the YouTube Music app for certain free users. A spokesperson said the change was part of an experiment involving “a small percentage of ad-supported users,” noting that lyrics remain accessible to most free listeners.
Parent company Google has reported growth in its subscription segment, with YouTube playing a central role. Earlier this month, Google disclosed that it now counts 325 million paying subscribers across Google One and YouTube Premium combined.
