Discord Rolls Out New Global Age Assurance System With Automatic Age Estimation
Discord is rolling out a new age-assurance system that estimates users’ age groups based on account signals, while limiting manual verification for most users.
Discord is rolling out a new global age assurance system that automatically places accounts into an adult, teen, or unconfirmed age group. The company says the approach is meant to provide stronger protections for younger users without requiring most people to submit an ID or selfie.
The rollout began in September 2026 and is being introduced gradually across accounts. Discord says more than 90 per cent of users will not be asked to confirm their age manually. Discord’s official announcement explains how the new system works and what changes users can expect.
How Discord Estimates a User’s Age
Instead of relying on a universal identity check, Discord uses an age-estimation model that examines account-related patterns. The company says those signals include how long an account has existed, the communities and servers it is connected to, and general activity levels.
Discord says the model does not read private messages, voice calls or other message content to determine a user’s age group. It also says no single server, community or friend determines the classification. Its technical explanation of the age-estimation model provides more detail about the signals and decision process.
The model produces a probability that an account belongs to an adult or a teen. Discord uses confidence thresholds rather than forcing every account into one category. Accounts that do not provide enough evidence remain unconfirmed.
There Are Three Age Group Outcomes
An account classified as an adult belongs to the 18-plus age group and does not receive the additional restrictions applied to teen accounts. A teen account is placed in the 13-to-17 group and receives additional protections around content, messaging and certain settings.
An unconfirmed account means Discord does not have enough information to determine an age group confidently. Those users can continue using core features such as messaging friends, joining voice calls and participating in non-age-restricted servers. Still, some adult-oriented content and settings remain unavailable until the user confirms they are an adult.
Users can check their status through User Settings > Account Status. Discord says the rollout may take several days to reach individual accounts.
What Changes for Teen Accounts
The new system is connected to a broader set of teen safety protections. Teen accounts can continue using Discord’s core communication features, but messages from people who are not already friends can be routed through the Message Requests system.
Discord also restricts access to age-restricted servers, channels and certain bot commands for teen accounts. Some sensitive images may also be blurred or blocked depending on where they appear. Discord’s age-restricted server guidance explains how those restrictions work.
Teen accounts also receive additional controls around what other users can see about their profiles and activity. The exact settings can vary by region because some countries and jurisdictions have additional requirements.
Manual Age Confirmation Is Still Available
Automatic estimation handles most accounts. Still, Discord has added several ways for users to confirm their age when the automated system can’t determine an adult age group or when access to an age-restricted feature requires confirmation.
Depending on the user’s region and device, available options can include a credit-card check, Apple App Store or Google Play age-range sharing, Google Wallet, a video selfie, an ID scan with a selfie, or AgeKey. Discord’s age-assurance documentation explains what information each method requires.
The options are not identical everywhere. For example, Discord says Google Wallet support currently covers passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
What Happens to Verification Data
Privacy is one of the most significant parts of Discord’s revised approach. The company says its age-assurance vendors handle the underlying verification information, and Discord receives an age signal rather than a user’s identity documents, face scan, or payment-card details.
For facial age estimation, Discord says processing takes place on the user’s device, meaning the video selfie does not leave the device. For ID-based checks, the company says the vendor processes the document and selfie, then deletes the underlying data after the age check is complete.
Discord has also published information about the vendors it uses and the contractual requirements it imposes. The company says vendors are prohibited from using submitted information for advertising, profiling or training their own models as part of the age-assurance process.
The System Can Get Age Groups Wrong
Automatic age estimation is not a certainty. Discord acknowledges that its model can make mistakes and has created a process for users to confirm their age if they believe the classification is incorrect.
The company says it uses multiple signals and confidence thresholds rather than relying on a single activity or server. It also aggregates scores over time so that one day’s behaviour does not determine an account’s classification. Discord’s technical documentation describes the model’s use of confidence thresholds and longer-term account patterns.
Discord says the model’s performance meets or exceeds the efficacy of methods used in regions with active age-assurance requirements, based on its own held-out evaluation set. The public documentation does not provide a single overall accuracy percentage that independently establishes how often the system classifies users correctly.
Global Does Not Mean Identical Everywhere
Although Discord describes the new approach as a global rollout, the exact age-assurance experience can differ depending on local regulations, device and account circumstances. The company’s current documentation notes that the automated model is not being used for users in some regions, including the United Kingdom and Australia, where different age-assurance arrangements apply.
Discord previously delayed its broader rollout while it expanded verification choices, increased vendor transparency and prepared technical documentation. The current rollout reflects those changes, including non-biometric alternatives for users who need to confirm adult status.
What Users Need to Know
For most users, the immediate change is expected to be limited. Discord says more than 90 per cent of users will not need to confirm their age manually, and adults automatically placed in the adult group can continue using the service without additional verification.
The more noticeable changes apply to teen and unconfirmed accounts, particularly when accessing age-restricted content or changing settings reserved for adults. Users who receive an incorrect classification have additional methods available to confirm their age.
The system also lets Discord apply age-related protections without requiring every account to undergo an identity check. At the same time, its effectiveness depends on the accuracy of automated classification and the safeguards surrounding any manual verification method.
Final Verdict
Discord’s updated age assurance system moves away from a universal verification requirement and toward automatic age-group estimation for most accounts. The model uses account-level and behavioural signals, while users who need to establish adult status can choose from several confirmation methods depending on their region.
The approach reduces the number of users who need to provide additional verification information, while allowing Discord to apply different safety settings to teen accounts. The company has also published technical and data-handling information so users can examine how the system works.
The biggest practical question will be how accurately the system handles different accounts and how smoothly Discord resolves incorrect classifications. For now, the rollout combines automated estimation, optional confirmation methods and additional protections for younger users rather than requiring every Discord account to complete the same age check.
