DoorDash Air Builds Drone Delivery Around Ground Logistics
DoorDash Air combines a new six-propeller drone with ground logistics and ADP routing software ahead of early pilot deliveries in Northern California.
DoorDash is taking a systems-first approach to drone delivery, focusing on the logistics around each order before putting the aircraft at the centre of the operation.
The company unveiled a new six-propeller drone at its Dash Forward 2026 event, but said the aircraft came later in development. DoorDash first worked on loading systems, restaurant handoffs, packaging and other ground operations needed to support aerial delivery.
DoorDash Air starts with logistics.
DoorDash Labs, the research and development team behind the company’s Dot sidewalk delivery robot, also created the drone service now known as DoorDash Air.
The team developed the Autonomous Delivery Platform, or ADP, to coordinate orders handled by human couriers, sidewalk robots and drones. The software considers factors including weather, flight range and ground traffic when deciding whether an order is suitable for drone delivery.
DoorDash says the system was designed around years of marketplace data rather than around the capabilities of a specific aircraft. The company has previously said more than 500,000 restaurants operate on its marketplace, giving it a large pool of information about order weight, delivery distance and merchant workflows.
Harrison Shih, who leads DoorDash Air, said the company began by studying what customers order and how local businesses operate, then designed the delivery system around those requirements.

The aircraft uses six slow-spinning propellers positioned at the ends of its arms. It is also equipped with a winch that lets it pick up, carry, and lower packages at delivery locations.
DoorDash announced plans for the service in July after receiving Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. The certification allows the company to operate commercial drone delivery services in the United States.
DoorDash plans to begin early pilot deliveries in Northern California with restaurant partners including Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Momo N Curry.
The strategy reflects DoorDash’s existing strengths in software and logistics. Rather than treating the drone as a standalone product, the company is building DoorDash Air as another delivery option within the same platform that already coordinates merchants, customers and couriers.
