Stripe has reportedly finalised an agreement to acquire AI infrastructure startup OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, according to Bloomberg. The companies have not yet announced that the transaction has closed.

OpenRouter gives developers access to hundreds of AI models through a single platform, allowing them to choose models based on factors such as capabilities, performance and cost.

OpenRouter’s rapid growth

The startup raised $113 million in May at a reported valuation of $1.3 billion. Investors include Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Alphabet’s CapitalG.

At the time, OpenRouter said it had 8 million users worldwide and offered access to more than 400 AI models. Its platform has since expanded to more than 500 models.

The Wall Street Journal reported in July that Stripe and OpenRouter were discussing an acquisition. Bloomberg now reports that those negotiations have resulted in an agreement worth more than $7 billion.
