Apple acquires all rights to ‘Severance,’ will produce future seasons in-house
Apple has secured full rights to Severance and will produce upcoming seasons internally, strengthening Apple TV+’s control over one of its most acclaimed original series.
Apple has secured full intellectual property rights to its acclaimed series Severance, purchasing the show outright from its original production partner Fifth Season, according to a report from Deadline. The agreement, valued at just under $70 million, transfers ownership of the show to Apple’s internal studio division, which will now oversee production of future seasons. Fifth Season will continue to be involved in an executive producer capacity.
The arrangement mirrors a prior agreement Apple reached with AMC Studios for the sci-fi drama Silo following its first Season, bringing that project further under Apple’s direct control.
With the acquisition complete, “Severance” joins Apple’s growing roster of flagship titles, alongside series such as Your Friends and Neighbors and Stick, further strengthening the company’s portfolio of high-profile streaming content.
Deadline reported that production expenses for “Severance” had risen beyond what Fifth Season was able to sustain independently. The studio had previously sought financial advances from Apple and had explored relocating production from New York to Canada to access more substantial and expedited tax incentives. Given Apple’s financial capacity to support the series long-term, the company opted to assume full ownership and production responsibility.
“Severance” is strategically important to Apple’s streaming platform. Its second Season became the most-watched series on Apple TV+ at the time of release. It earned the most nominations at the 2025 Emmy Awards among the company’s original programming.
According to Deadline, the series is expected to span four seasons, with additional possibilities including spin-offs, a prequel instalment, and localised international adaptations under consideration.
