xAI’s Dot.com Domain Redirect Fuels Speculation Around OpenAI’s Dots Launch

OpenAI’s launch of its new AI agent product, Dots, has sparked online discussion after users noticed that Elon Musk’s xAI owns the dot.com domain and redirects to the Grok chatbot app.

The discovery has led to speculation that xAI may have acquired the domain in response to OpenAI’s announcement, though no confirmation has been made. The purchase could also be for standard domain management reasons.

Domain Ownership Draws Attention

OpenAI introduced Dots as an always-on AI agent with a colourful avatar. Soon after the launch, users noticed that dot.com is owned by xAI and was transferred to the company in July, according to domain registration records.

The discussion gained traction after AI-focused users on X, including @birdabo, highlighted the domain redirect. The account, which describes itself as the “chief shitposting officer” of @SpaceXAI, helped spread the conversation online.

xAI has not publicly explained why it owns the domain. The site currently redirects to Grok’s app page, while the more direct dots.com domain belongs to a separate, long-defunct company.

The incident has become another unusual point of discussion in the competition between OpenAI and xAI as both companies continue developing AI products.
