OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Workplace Tools to Compete With Office Software Suites

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT beyond a conversational AI assistant with new workplace features that resemble traditional office productivity software. The company introduced tools for collaboration, document creation, and presentations during its Dev Day event.

The new features are designed to help teams work with ChatGPT and AI agents in shared environments, moving the platform closer to an integrated workplace productivity suite.

ChatGPT Gains Shared Workspaces and AI Collaboration

OpenAI introduced Space, a shared workspace inside ChatGPT where coworkers can collaborate with the chatbot and AI agents called Dots. The feature lets teams organise pages, files, and instructions in one place.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described Spaces as a workspace where files and pages can live together, while AI agents assist with ongoing tasks. Users can provide page instructions, such as monitoring team channels and updating information automatically.

OpenAI Builds AI-Powered Alternatives to Documents and Slides

The company also launched Pages, a document creation tool designed for collaboration between people and AI agents. Users can write, research, generate charts, create images, and organise information within the workspace.

OpenAI also introduced collaborative Slides, a presentation tool that lets users create presentations through conversations with ChatGPT. Multiple users and AI agents can edit slides, add comments, and work together on presentations.

OpenAI Expands Into Workplace Software

The new features represent OpenAI’s broader push into workplace productivity, an area traditionally dominated by companies such as Microsoft and Google.

At the same time, major software companies are expanding their own AI offerings as the industry moves toward more integrated AI-powered workplace tools.
