OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Plugins With App Interfaces and AI Automations

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT plugins with app-like interfaces, improved developer tools, and automation features that let third-party applications work more deeply inside ChatGPT.

ChatGPT plugins already allow users to connect AI assistants with external services such as productivity and business tools. The new plugin extensions will give developers more ways to build dedicated experiences directly within ChatGPT.

Developers Can Build Interactive ChatGPT Apps

OpenAI said developers can create app-like plugin experiences with dedicated spaces inside the ChatGPT sidebar. These extensions can include interactive panels where users work with connected tools while continuing conversations with ChatGPT.

The company also said developers can add file viewers that support the formats used by their applications, allowing users to interact with documents and other content directly within ChatGPT.

OpenAI is also introducing a new Plugin Creator tool to simplify development and updating the plugin submission process. The company said it has improved plugin discovery, rankings, and recommendations while giving users more control over individual access permissions.

ChatGPT Plugins Gain Automation Support

OpenAI said ChatGPT Sites, which allow users to create lightweight websites with ChatGPT, can also host these plugins. This allows users to share app experiences with others while keeping connected data and permissions separate.

The company is also adding support for the MCP Events specification, which is designed to help plugins start automated actions when events occur in connected applications.

With these updates, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT plugins as a broader platform for developers to create integrated AI-powered applications and automated workflows.
