Meta Launches New VR Glasses With IMAX Entertainment Features
Meta introduces new VR glasses with a lighter design, high-resolution displays, IMAX support, Disney+ 3D content, and Meta AI.
Meta is making another push into virtual reality with its new VR Glasses, a lighter device designed around immersive entertainment, high-resolution displays, and new content partnerships.
The company announced the glasses at its Connect event, saying they will launch next spring with a starting price of $1,299.99. Meta says the device is designed to deliver a more immersive experience in a form factor closer to traditional eyewear.
A Lighter Alternative to Traditional VR Headsets
Meta says the new glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3 and use a magnesium alloy frame. They run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor and connect to a separate computing puck that also serves as a battery pack.
The glasses use Micro-OLED displays to deliver what Meta calls a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree. The device also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio for movies and other entertainment content.
IMAX and Disney+ Entertainment Features
Meta is positioning the glasses primarily as an entertainment device, focusing on immersive movies and 3D experiences. The company says the glasses are the first IMAX-enhanced certified VR device and will support IMAX-style viewing features.
Meta is also working with Disney to bring selected Disney+ movies in 3D to the device. The company says users will be able to watch content with immersive environments, visual effects, and spatial audio designed to make viewing more interactive.
Meta Adds AI and Gesture Controls
The glasses include Meta AI, letting users control features with voice commands. Meta says users can perform actions such as starting a movie by speaking to the device.
The glasses will also support hand gestures as another way to interact with the system.
Meta Continues VR Hardware Push
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company had previously shifted its focus toward building fewer VR devices while waiting for major improvements in hardware and user experience.
The new VR glasses represent Meta’s latest attempt to make virtual reality more accessible by combining a lighter design with entertainment features that go beyond traditional VR gaming.
