OpenAI Expands Codex With Reusable Cloud Environments and AI Code Security Tools

OpenAI is expanding its Codex software engineering agent with reusable cloud development environments, improved code review tools, security features, and new API capabilities designed to make AI-assisted programming more flexible.

The updates, announced during OpenAI’s Dev Day event, allow developers to use Codex across devices while maintaining persistent cloud environments instead of creating separate temporary workspaces for each task.

Codex Gains Persistent Cloud Development Environments

OpenAI said developers can now run Codex from their computer, phone, or the cloud using reusable development environments with shared settings and permissions. The company said the change is designed to help teams start tasks faster and collaborate more easily.

The Codex CLI is also receiving updates, including voice-based task control, a new /agents view for managing multiple tasks, improved session handling, and a redesigned terminal interface for longer coding sessions.

AI-Powered Code Reviews and Security Tools

Codex is being integrated into a new code review experience inside the ChatGPT desktop app. Developers can review summaries, explore changes, and ask Codex questions before submitting feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests.

OpenAI is also introducing Codex Security Cloud, which allows developers to scan GitHub repositories, identify security issues, investigate findings, and prepare fixes in the cloud even when they are away from their devices.

Codex Security Cloud includes access to models from OpenAI’s Daybreak cybersecurity initiative without requiring developers to submit a separate application.

New API Features for Developers

OpenAI also announced new API updates, including a Decisions API designed for real-time decision-making using user-defined questions and predefined answers.

The company is updating its Agents API with support for computer use and Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, allowing developers to build OpenAI-powered agents that run entirely on AWS infrastructure.

With these updates, OpenAI is positioning Codex as a broader development platform that supports coding, collaboration, security, and automated workflows across different environments.
