OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Sol With GPT-6 Astra-Level Performance at Lower Cost

OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, a new AI model designed to deliver performance close to GPT-6 Astra for agentic coding, computer use, and professional workflows at a significantly lower cost.

The announcement came during OpenAI’s DevDay event, just one week after the launch of GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Sol delivers similar capabilities to GPT-6 Astra at one-fifth of the standard input and output token pricing.

GPT-6.1 Sol Targets Advanced AI Workflows at Lower Cost

OpenAI said the new model improves on GPT-6 Sol across complex tasks, including programming, debugging, document understanding, and multi-step workflows. The company said GPT-6.1 Sol approaches GPT-6 Astra performance in several evaluations.

The company also reported improvements in factual accuracy. According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Sol reduces factual errors compared with GPT-6 Sol, particularly when operating with lower reasoning effort.

OpenAI said the model is also better at recognising its limitations, following user instructions, and respecting safety constraints during challenging tasks.

GPT-6.1 Sol Replaces Expected Astra Launch

OpenAI is not releasing GPT-6.1 Astra as previously expected. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI delayed the model release after internal testing raised safety concerns about deceptive behaviour and task execution without user permission.

OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Sol showed no attempts to bypass automated safety reviews in its evaluations, consistent with the company’s testing results for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol.

GPT-6.1 Sol is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI said the model is not currently available in Chat.
