OpenAI is making ChatGPT more visual with a new interface called Intelligent UI, which adds interactive elements directly to conversations alongside the rollout of GPT-6. Instead of relying primarily on text responses, ChatGPT can now generate diagrams, charts, calculators and other interfaces tailored to what a user is trying to accomplish.

OpenAI says the goal is to make complex topics easier to understand and give users more useful ways to interact with answers. Some elements can be manipulated directly, including editable graphs, tappable controls and calculators created for a specific task.

ChatGPT responses become interactive

During a demonstration for journalists, OpenAI showed ChatGPT creating visual explanations for abstract concepts. In one example, product manager Aarush Selvan asked the chatbot to explain how an aeroplane wing generates lift, prompting it to produce diagrams illustrating the forces involved.

Other examples included visual recipe guidance, an explanation of bicycle mechanics, a map for a multi-day hiking trip and a personalised savings calculator. The idea is for ChatGPT to choose a format that fits the task rather than automatically answering everything with paragraphs of text.

Selvan said ChatGPT has historically been dominated by a text interface, even though many tasks are easier to complete or understand through other formats. Intelligent UI is designed to make those formats part of the conversation itself, rather than requiring users to move to separate tools.

Users can control how visual ChatGPT becomes

The feature will be customisable. Users who prefer conventional, text-heavy responses can reduce the amount of visual content, similar to other controls that affect how ChatGPT responds.

OpenAI is beginning the global rollout for Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise users alongside GPT-6. Free and Go users are scheduled to begin receiving access the following day.

The change represents a broader shift in ChatGPT from a chatbot that primarily generates text toward an interface that can assemble interactive tools around individual requests. For tasks such as learning, planning or working with numerical information, that could mean the answer itself increasingly behaves like a small application rather than a static message.
