Fervo Energy has started selling electricity from its Cape Station enhanced geothermal project to the grid, bringing the first portion of the plant into commercial operation after a 23-month build.

The company said the first block began commercial operations on September 30, one day ahead of schedule. It represents roughly one-third of the first 100 megawatts planned at Cape Station.

First commercial milestone for enhanced geothermal

Cape Station is a significant step for enhanced geothermal systems, which use deeper drilling to access hotter rock than conventional geothermal projects. Fervo says the full site could eventually support as much as 4 gigawatts of generation.

Fervo co-founder and CEO Tim Latimer said the team completed the first block ahead of schedule, despite having no direct precedent at this scale. The company is now targeting construction timelines of about 18 months for future blocks as it refines its development process.

Geothermal could appeal to data centre operators

Fervo’s development timeline could make enhanced geothermal attractive to companies looking for new sources of reliable electricity, including data centre operators facing rising power demand.

Geothermal projects can also be developed in phases, allowing new generation capacity to come online as demand increases. That approach closely matches how large data centres are often expanded over time.

Google, Southern California Edison and other buyers have already committed to purchasing power from the Cape Station project.

Fervo scales technology borrowed from the oil and gas industry

Founded in 2017, Fervo has adapted drilling techniques and technologies developed by the oil and gas industry to reach geothermal resources that were previously difficult to access economically.

The company went public in May through an upsized initial public offering that raised $1.9 billion. Before its IPO, Fervo had raised more than $1.3 billion from investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Congruent Ventures and Capricorn Investment Group.

With the first Cape Station block now operating, Fervo has moved enhanced geothermal from development into commercial power generation while preparing to expand the project toward its initial 100-megawatt target.
